🐻 Canon Extender Ef 2X Ii Compatibility Chart
I have been looking for a quick compatibility chart online for the Canon EF 2x and 1.4x extenders. Thankfully B&H has been kind enough to translate the chart into an easy to read table found below. There's two sets of links below that will get you to the 2x and 1.4x charts.
The "upgraded internal processor" of the 1.4x III is only compatible with Mk II SUPER Telephoto lenses. The Canon EF 100-400 Mk II is not one of the Mk II SUPER Telephoto lenses that is compatible. Therefore you will not see an increase in focus speed over the 1.4x II.
Extenders, also often called teleconverters, are optical accessories that attach to the rear end of a lens to increase the focal length. The two most common varieties are 1.4x and 2x extenders, though Nikon also makes a 1.7x version as well. As you’ve probably guessed, the number represents the factor by which the focal length gets multiplied.

She didn't want anything too bulky to be able to take it hiking, so she bough a Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM. Now, the lens works great, but as the reach is a bit short for some things she also bought a 2x Canon teleconverter. The problem is, the AF doesn't work with both. Looking into the documentation of the lens, it turns

A Welland wrote: Does anyone know if the Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5-6 L IS USM lens is compatible with the new 1.4X II extender/teleconverter? No. The only Canon zooms that can mate with the Canon EF 1.4x II and 2x II are the four 70-200Ls, and the 100-400L.
Field sharpness. From Doug Brown’s review it is clear that the extender 2X III delivers a crisp image with the EF 600mm F/4 IS II in controlled conditions and at close distance. A white-tailed kite is of course a more challenging subject as the soft, low-contrast white feathers expose any weakness in the optics, such as chromatic aberrations.

The Canon EF 70-300mm DO USM manual says it will not work with the EF 2X II extender. Will it work (particularly the IS) with the newer E F 2X III extender? No, it will most likely not be fully compatible with that lens. Check the compatibility chart.
