Rechargable battery and therefore need their batteries recharged. Cars without CA have a rechargeable so it will be recharged when the key is on the fob. This is not limited to the 7 series as someone mentioned. You can tell easily if your keyfob have a regular battery or recharge battery by lookng at the back.
Ever since I bought my 2006 BMW 325xi Wagon (Used) without comfort access, the keys have not locked nor unlocked the car remotely (From button). I thought that the batteries were just bad and recently bought a new key form the dealer, which the parts guy assured me it would work (Do not have comfort access, could not replace battery).

My 2018 330e aux battery also needs replacing: Max eDrive not possible due to a "system request". My local BMW dealer does have the battery, which is nice, but they want $520 plus install $. The same VARTA battery is available for 72 Euro from spareto.com in Europe, I elected to get the BOSCH for 81USD.

10 year old battery More likely than not is the battery. They are simple watch batteries in the key fobs. If you go to the dealer stealer, you will be looking at around $220 per key and probably charged for the re-programming. Do a YouTube search on BMW key and a battery replacement video should come up. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I have seen a few posts asking how to change the battery in the BMW key fob with comfort access but I have not seen anyone show pictures or an actual guide. 2 days ago · Keep your BMW key battery charged with regular driving. Each time your key is inserted into the ignition and turned to position 1 or position 2, the battery will automatically charge. If you don’t drive your car regularly, try to at least take it on 1 or 2 long drives per year to make sure the battery stays charged.
Start by doing a basic setting for your ''dead'' key: -Enter the vehicle and close all doors (unlock) -put the key in the ignition socket. -Press and maintain pressure on central locking button. -briefly press the start/stop button once (do not press the clutch or brake pedal) -release central locking button.
This problem is inherent in BMW's programming algorithms. Almost all other manufactures prevent the doors from being locked if the key is left in the car. But not BMW! In their mind they must think we want to lock our keys in the car so we know where we left them in case we forgot.
You can program a key yourself with a special tool. You can have a locksmith program you a new aftermarket key ($100 to $300). You can go to the dealer and have them program a new key ($300 to $500). Replace the battery. If that doesn’t work then your button is damaged and will need to be repaired. Send me a PM.
The Remote Key, or Fob, serves TWO functions: 1) Sending Radio Signal to "Aerial Diversity" to Lock/Unlock doors, or if Comfort Access (CA) option is installed, to send radio signal to Door Handle Module to unlock by proximity. 2) "Chip" in key is "read" or queried by the Insert Compartment, and signal is sent from Insert Compartment to CAS
